Non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, naturally-derived ingredients, fragrance + dye free laundry detergent in a little pod… That’s the innovative product GrabGreen has out on the market. Composed primarily of sodium percarbonate, which is made from natural soda ash and uses oxygen to remove stains + alkalinity to assist cleaning, their 3-in-1 laundry detergent is revolutionizing the way we wash our clothes.
3-in-1 Laundry Detergent
With no mess and no cleanup, these easy-to-use pods dissolve completely in cold and hot water, quickly releasing and activating the detergent to clean clothes… Just as long as you remember to place them in the washer drum and not the dispenser.
Philosphy
Grabgreen was founded on the philosophy of creating a new eco-friendly approach to how consumers experience and solve fabric care needs. Headed by a team of organic chemists and formulators, they have paid special attention to simplifying usage, minimizing waste, and selecting the most natural and effective ingredients possible.

SUN TUNNEL Skylights – the Most Innovative Skylight in the Industry
Velux America also offers their trademarked Sun Tunnels™ for areas of the home where traditional skylights aren’t needed or are unable to fit. These tubular skylights allow natural light into hallways, closets, laundry rooms, smaller interior baths and any other area you can think of.
Cost-Effective
Less expensive than traditional skylights, Sun Tunnels can be used extensively in areas of the home where a view to the outside is not required, but more natural light is desired. Velux also features optional light kits which turn these units into 24-hour sources of light.
On the Cutting-Edge
Delivering brighter, whiter natural light for all areas of the home while reducing energy consumption, Velux America is doing its part to make the world a cleaner place.
For those wanting the Sun’s rays to fill their home with comfortable natural lighting, modern skylights are the most cost-effective and energy efficient choice. Working with the environment to allow healthy daylight and fresh air in while simultaneously ventilating moist, humid, and stale air out, skylights also remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the home.
Modern Skylights
In addition, skylights being made today by companies like Velux America lack the main drawback these eco-friendly lighting alternatives use to be known for. Once properly installed with their pre-engineered flashing kit, leaking is a thing of the past.
Accessories
Offering beautiful daylight and free ventilation, skylights can make light and ventilation adjustments, as well as automatically close by way of their precipitation detecting sensors.
Realm of Design Inc. is a stylish company that creates the finest eco-friendly architectural features for the home. Their entire line of Green Architectural Stone products are made with 100 percent recycled glass aggregate, which makes great use of a non-biodegradable substance.
13 Million Tons of Glass Waste a Year
Every year we as a country generate nearly 13 million tons of glass waste. Realm of Design consumes 8 percent of this waste while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint by crushing the glass with a low-energy process.
Made in America
Located in Henderson, Nevada, all Realm of Design creations are manufactured in-house. A proud member of the U.S. Green Building Council, their products include porte-cocheres and porticos, mantels and over mantels, kitchen hoods, columns and balustrade systems, décor and embellishments, flooring, moldings and copings, wall veneer pavers, fountains, domes and gazebos.
Southern California Edison of Rosemead, California, says they plan to build two solar-powered plants east of Los Angeles. The announcement came on Tuesday that the utility company will partner with Arizona-based First Solar Inc., a prolific company which is at the forefront of photovoltaic technology development.
Solar Farms
Utilizing thin-film cadmium telluride panels for the projects, which are known as “solar farms,” First Solar plans to build plants near Desert Center in Riverside County and Stateline in San Bernardino County.
The Benefits
When the plants are completed in 2015, they’ll be among the largest of their kind and provide up to 550 megawatts of solar electricity, which is enough to power about 170,000 homes. By comparison, your average natural gas-fueled power plant produces roughly 1,000 megawatts. In addition, Edison says the projects will also create several hundred construction jobs.
California Public Utilities Commission
But the projects will need state approval from the California Public Utilities Commission before anything happens. California currently has a goal of delivering 20 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2010, and the Golden State is also looking into legislation to increase that goal to 33 percent by 2020.
Most of us don’t have the slightest idea how much electricity we use until we get that ever so lovely monthly bill. But with the implementation of smart-grid technology in various states and around the world, as Bob Dylan croons, “the times they are a changin’”…
Using smart-grid technology, those that have a system in place are benefiting from significantly reduced energy bills through higher efficiency. This cutting-edge technology allows customers to monitor and control their electricity use through highly sophisticated software and a state-of-the-art metering system. Once installed in the home, a “smart meter” tracks real-time electrical use, transmitting the information back to your power company.
This two-way communication network (which may include power line, radio, or cellular connections) gives utility companies the ability to notify customers when peak usage times are. Having this valuable information at the ready, customers plan usage accordingly to save money. Peak electrical usage times are in the afternoon and evening, so running appliances in the early part of the day allows one to drastically cut down on energy expenses.
A Brief History & the Future of Smart-Grid Technology
Smart meters have been used by commercial and industrial customers for decades, but in recent years they have become affordable enough to be installed in the average household.
According to ABI research, some 76 million smart meters have been installed worldwide, with that number forecasted to double by 2013. Italy’s main utility company, Enel, has so far been at the forefront with respect to implementation; since 2001 they have installed more than 30 million smart meters. California plans to install roughly 12 million smart meters over the next few years, and the Canadian province of Ontario has told its utility companies to install a smart meter in every household by 2010.
Smart Meter Benefits:
Significant Energy Savings
Natural Resource Consumption
Lowered Carbon Emissions
Promotes Green Technologies Including Wind, Solar & Plug-In Vehicles
Social Issues & Potential Problems
Given that studies have found that when people know how much power they’re using, use is reduced by about seven percent, a major potential problem arises. Most power companies are reluctant to invest in technology that will reduce consumption of the product they sell. But one way to realign the public interest with that of utility companies is through “decoupling,” a process which breaks the direct relationship between electricity sales and profits. California has had a tremendous amount of success with decoupling.
The Future of Smart-Grid Technology
Smart meters will eventually be able to communicate with smart thermostats, appliances, and other electrical devices to give accurate readings of our energy consumption. Information will be accessible via home readouts or web-based portals, through which we’ll be able to set temperature preferences for thermostats and one day even enable us to select cleaner energy sources like solar and wind power.
Getting Involved
The next time you pay your utility bill just call them up and ask about smart-grid technology, and how far along their plans are toward implementation and installation.
